OIL PAINTING CLASS

Dora teaches in-person oil painting classes at the Compass Art Center. This class takes students through the exciting process of painting in a realistic style. They will learn techniques to make objects appear three-dimensional, adding depth and intrigue to the artwork. Designed for all skill levels - beginner, intermediate, or advanced - the class allows students to work at their own pace while receiving individualized instruction and feedback. Participants can choose from a variety of still life compositions tailored to different skill levels, or they can use a personal photograph as reference. The class offers structured guidance while encouraging personal choice and creative growth. A materials list and detailed class information will be sent via email upon registration.

DRAWING AND PAINTING FOR BEGINNERS

Discover the fundamentals of drawing and painting in this beginner class, designed for those with little to no experience. Through step-by-step instruction, you’ll learn to observe and draw basic shapes using charcoal and conte, explore tonal rendering to create depth and form, and experiment with a variety of mark making methods to develop your own creative expression. We’ll cover the principles of light, shadow, and perspective, and as the class progresses we’ll introduce you to color theory, blending techniques, and basic painting skills.

Students begin with drawing for their first session to learn the foundational skills for both drawing and painting. Completion of one full session of drawing is required before moving on to painting. The painting section will have a separate supply list.

The class emphasizes hands-on learning in a relaxed, encouraging environment where you can build confidence in both drawing and painting. By the end of the course, you’ll have a better understanding of essential techniques, composition, and the skills to bring your creative ideas to life.

This course is designed by two experienced artists, Dora Patin and Lisa Denison, who bring distinct yet complementary approaches to the learning experience. Dora, known for her meticulous trompe l’oeil realism, offers insights into precision and detail, while Lisa’s imaginative style and expressive brushstrokes encourage spontaneity and artistic freedom. While the course is designed and often co-taught by both instructors, some sessions may be led by only one teacher depending on enrollment. Tuition reflects a single-instructor rate, even in sessions where both instructors are present.
